I awoke in a flush of sweat, fighting off my covers before realising I was in bed. Safe. There was no attacker cornering me in a dark club corner, no monster tugging me to the depths. Safe.

Nibbles gave me a concerned squeak from his cage in the corner of my room.

“It’s alright, I’m alright.” I petted him, letting his long fur soothe me. “Ouch!” I had stroked him for more than the five pets he allotted before he got bitey. “Just for that, you can wait for your treats until after I’ve got a plaster.”

I made my way to the shared bathroom, found a plaster and grimaced at the mirror. I was so pale, I looked grey with dark smudges under my eyes and lank hair. I needed a shower. Nibbles would have to wait a bit longer.

Once I was clean, and looked almost human, I padded back to my room and fed my giant guinea-pig sized hamster his seed treats. “Do you think I should call the counselling service?” I asked him.

He looked up at me with his bulging brownish-red eyes and squeaked. Was that a yes? Then he swiped the treat from my hand and scurried back into his bed, sending shredded paper flying as he burrowed in.

I got dressed slowly and made my decision. I would call the counselling line…after I’d cleaned the flat. “And I’m starting with your cage,” I said to Nibbles.
